A very beautiful, carved wood portable table stick barometer, after a design by Daniel Quare in the 17th century. Of sectional form, engraved 'Garrard The Crown Jewellers, from T. W. Elliot Lt', raised on four scrolling foliate metal feet, 101.5cm high overall. On fluted column and gilt metal support.
Quare obtained a patent for a barometer design in 1695. This claimed that the barometer could be inverted without either spilling the liquid or allowing air to get into the tube.
This is a wonderful piece of history & a beautiful stand-alone item.
The original is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
