Antique Arts & Crafts / Edwardian Tambour Stationery Cabinet (c 1885-1910)

A charming and highly collectible antique desk accessory, this roll-top cabinet combines superb craftsmanship with intelligent, functional design. Perfect for keeping a desktop organized, this piece is an excellent example of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic, prized for its honest use of materials and clean lines.

  • Style: Arts and Crafts / Edwardian (c. 1885 –1910). The simple, robust construction, visible wood grain, and emphasis on utility align perfectly with the Arts and Crafts movement's rejection of fussy Victorian ornamentation.

  • Roll-Top Mechanism (Tambour): The front features a fully functional tambour door—a flexible, slatted wooden screen that rolls smoothly up and back into the cabinet's curved top to reveal the contents (as seen in image 2). This mechanism is both practical and a classic design feature.

  • Construction: Crafted from a rich Oak with a deep, warm patina.

  • Interior Layout:

    • Upper Section: Features vertical organisational filing/letter slots  ideal for  mail, bills, notepads, cards etc.

    • Lower Section: A hinged fall-front panel opens to reveal a large compartment perfect for storage.

  • Portability: Topped with a sturdy, curved brass or metal carrying handle, making it a highly portable item for a period desktop or library table.

  • Base: Sits on a solid wooden base, and retains its original green felt lining.

  • Good Antique Condition. The wood has developed a beautiful, deep patina consistent with over a century of age. The tambour door operates smoothly, and the internal dividers are intact. The metal carrying handle is firm. This cabinet is clean and ready for immediate use, bringing period elegance to any office, library, or writing desk.

  • Dimensions: Height: 13.5 inches, Width: 12 inches. Depth: 6.5 inches.

A beautifully preserved piece of functional history—perfect for collectors of antique office equipment or those seeking refined desktop storage.
