- An exceptional, highly collectible late 19th-century Japanese Meiji period floor lamp base cast in heavy, solid bronze. Adhering to high-end Asian artistry, this monumental standard lamp features an intricately cast multi-tiered baluster column standing on a substantial domed pedestal base.
- Meiji Period Artistry: A classic late-19th-century export-era casting featuring traditional bulbous knops, tiered spindle turns, and elegant structural geometry.
-
High-Relief Masterwork: The column features exceptional, deep relief casting and hand-incised detailing depicting traditional Japanese symbolic motifs:
- A detailed hawk / bird of prey perched among rugged pine branches (matsu).
- A beautifully rendered mythical Minogame (a dragon-headed turtle with a trailing seaweed tail) swimming through finely incised, turbulent rolling waves.
- Decorative archaic lappet / Ruyi-head borders accentuating the neck segments.
- Rich Patination: Displays a deep, naturally dark-aged chocolate-brown and aubergine bronze patina with an authentic, unpolished surface glow.
- Vintage Fittings: Outfitted with a classic solid brass bayonet-cap bulb holder featuring its integrated push-bar on/off switch.
Condition
- Excellent antique condition overall.
- The bronze structure is perfectly straight, exceptionally heavy, and structurally sound with no wobble or repair welds.
- Displays a beautiful, undisturbed historic patina to the metal.
- Mechanical Note: The lamp features an early decorative telescoping adjustment lever on the stem; this mechanism is now historically frozen/seized and does not slide, meaning the lamp functions strictly at a fixed, static height.
- The lower stepped base block shows authentic, historic paint distressing and surface scuffs consistent with its 130+ year age.
