Antique Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Jardinière
This stunning antique bronze jardinière is a true masterpiece from Japan's Meiji period (1868-1912). Meticulously crafted with a deep, rich patina, this piece is a testament to the exceptional metalwork of the era. Made by the Yoshida Workshop, which operated from the 1870s - 1880s in Kyoto.
The mark to the base reads:「大日本」(Great Japan) 「吉田造」(Yoshida-made) 「京都」(Kyoto). Or more plainly: 大日本 吉田造 京都 - 'Dai-Nippon Yoshida-zō Kyōto'
'Greater Japan Made by Yoshida Kyōto'
The workshop of Yoshida in Kyoto was already active during the early Meiji period, producing bronze jardinières (suiban), vases, gongs and ornaments for both domestic and export markets. His work was shown at the 1876 International Exhibition in Philadelphia.
Therefore we can date this jardinière to around 1870.
The jardinière features beautifully cast Japanese Phoenix motifs, a classic symbol of good fortune, renewal, and prosperity in Asian mythology. The intricate details of their feathers and flowing forms are truly remarkable, bringing the mythical creatures to life.
Whether used as a decorative planter or as a stand-alone art object, this bronze jardinière adds a touch of historical elegance and timeless beauty to any space. It measures approximately 21 cm in height, 16 cm at the base, and 19 cm at the mouth, with a maximum width of 28 cm.
