A wonderful, authentic antique church pew, likely dating from the Victorian or Edwardian era (circa 1850s-1920s). This substantial bench is crafted from rich pitch pine, a durable timber commonly used for ecclesiastical furniture.
The pew features a classic, robust design with a high, panelled backrest and shaped end supports. It retains its original character, including the numbers "42" (which we know is the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything!)  and "48" set within a traditional quatrefoil motif on each finished end panel. These numbers were historically used for pew rent administration.
This piece offers excellent, sturdy seating for a hallway, dining area, or kitchen. It has been modified at some point in its history from a longer run of pews to create this versatile, freestanding size, resulting in finished end panels on both sides - hence the two different numbers at each end.
