This is an exceptional late 19th-century Burmese howdah chair in lacquered teak, originally used as an elevated seat for transporting nobility on the back of an elephant.

While many howdahs were wide benches for multiple passengers, this is a rare single-rider example, featuring a more intimate seat dimension (21" x 13.5") that suggests it was commissioned for a specific individual of high status or ceremonial role.

Design & Craftsmanship:
The design showcases exquisite pierced spindle galleries, intricately carved floral and foliate panels, and a characteristic shaped base with gently curving support rails. The original black lacquer finish remains largely intact, revealing beautiful areas of red ground underneath—a hallmark of authentic period Burmese lacquerware. This natural age wear gives the surface incredible depth, character, and undeniable authenticity.

Modern Interior Appeal:
Presented today as a unique decorative piece, its compact proportions (30" L x 17" H) make it far more versatile than standard oversized howdahs. It functions perfectly as an exotic statement piece at the end of a bed, an occasional table or a conversation-starting hall bench.
