Rare Georgian Bronze Town Crier’s / Watchman’s Alarm Handbell (c. 1714–1830).

A magnificent and rare survivor from the Georgian era, this large, heavy bronze handbell is a quintessential piece of English village history. Likely utilised by a town crier or a village watchman, this bell would have been a vital tool for alerting the community to fires, evening curfews, or important public announcements. Given its age—dating between 196 and 312 years old—it represents a significant piece of social history from the 18th or early 19th century.

Construction & Material

  • Bell: Cast from heavy, high-quality bronze (bell metal), providing a deep, resonant, and commanding tone. The bronze has developed a beautiful, authentic patina that only comes with centuries of age.
  • Handle: Features a solid, hand-turned oak handle. The wood shows a rich grain and the dark character expected of period oak.
Condition
This bell is in honest, antique condition. The oak handle shows significant wear, particularly at the top where the wood has been worn down through decades of grip and use.
